Welcome to Healing Little Hearts

Welcome to Alex Anderson-Kahl's Blog: Healing Little Hearts

Hello and welcome to my blog! I'm Alex Anderson-Kahl, a dedicated school psychologist with a passion for improving the mental health of children. I'm thrilled to have you join me on this journey, and I hope that this space becomes a valuable resource for you.

Let me start by sharing a bit about my background. I hold an Advanced Degree in School Psychology from the University of South Dakota and am a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. My professional journey has led me through various settings, from residential treatment centers for children to those for individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the complexities of mental health and the importance of personalized, compassionate care.

Currently, I serve in an elementary and middle school, where I strive to make a difference in the lives of children, teachers, and parents every day. It's a role that brings new challenges and rewards with each sunrise, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Why children's mental health, you might ask? Well, I believe that every child deserves to experience the warmth of the sun, both outside and within their own minds. This belief is not just a metaphor for happiness and positivity; it's a call to action to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive mentally and emotionally.

In my practice, I often encounter a lack of understanding about what a child needs to be successful. This gap in knowledge can lead to children feeling misunderstood and unsupported, exacerbating conditions like depression, ADHD, and Autism. However, my primary focus is on mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, which are increasingly prevalent yet often overlooked in children.

My approach to therapy combines person-centered therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy. This hybrid modality respects the individuality of each child while promoting positive change. It's about meeting children where they are and guiding them towards where they want to be.

Through this blog, I aim to inspire and encourage parents to help their children and improve their mental health. I'll be sharing insights on a range of topics, including:

  • Understanding Your Child's Depression: I'll delve into the signs, symptoms, and misconceptions surrounding childhood depression.
  • Communication Strategies: I'll provide practical tips on how to talk to your child about their feelings and experiences.
  • Creating a Supportive Environment at Home: I'll discuss how to create a nurturing, positive environment that promotes mental well-being.
  • Working with Schools: I'll share advice on collaborating with teachers and school administrators to support your child's mental health.
  • When to Seek Professional Help: I'll provide guidance on recognizing when it's time to seek professional help and how to navigate the process.
  • Parents Taking Care of Themselves: I'll emphasize the importance of self-care for parents, because you can't pour from an empty cup.

One of the most transformative experiences in my career involved working with a suicidal 7-year-old. Witnessing his life change as we unpacked his trauma and pain was a profound reminder of why I do what I do. By partnering with his parents, we were able to help him develop healthy coping mechanisms and ensure his safety and happiness. Stories like these are a testament to the power of understanding, compassion, and professional help.

I hope that by sharing my experiences and knowledge, this blog can serve as a beacon of hope and a source of valuable information for parents, educators, and anyone interested in children's mental health. I invite you to join me on this journey. Together, we can create a world where every child experiences the warmth of the sun, both outside and within their own minds.

Stay tuned for more posts, and feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, and questions in the comments section. Let's start a conversation that matters.
